Laboratory Services Q & A

What is lab testing?

Lab testing includes diagnostic tests that check for medical problems you or a loved one may face. Examples of lab tests include urine tests, blood testing, nasal or throat swabs, and skin biopsies. Women's Specialty Care SC offers in-office lab testing and services using HealthLab to make each patient visit a convenient experience.

Women's Specialty Care SC takes most insurances, including Medicare.

Why might I need lab testing?

The Women's Specialty Care SC team may recommend lab testing if you exhibit signs of, or have risk factors for, some of the following medical conditions:

  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • High cholesterol
  • High triglycerides
  • Thyroid problems
  • Diabetes
  • Low testosterone or estrogen
  • Other hormone imbalances
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Skin cancer
  • Cervical cancer

You might be a candidate for more than one type of lab testing to ensure you receive the care needed to avoid serious complications.

What should I expect during lab testing?

What you can expect during lab testing depends on the type of tests you undergo. Examples include:

Tissue swabs

The team might swab the inside of your nostril, throat, cervix, or other tissues to screen for illnesses and diseases.

Urine tests

During a urine test, you urinate into a cup for a lab to analyze.

Blood tests

The team uses a tiny needle to take a blood sample from your arm during blood testing.

The team might take a sample of skin (skin biopsy) or other tissues to screen for cancer.

Which lab tests are right for me?

To find out if you need any lab tests, the Women's Specialty Care SC team reviews your symptoms with you and your medical history. They check your vital signs and complete a physical exam.

In addition to lab testing, they may suggest an ultrasound, X-rays, or other imaging procedures if needed.

What do my lab test results mean?

You can expect to get lab test results the same day, the next day, or after several days, depending on the type of tests you undergo.

The team discusses the results with you and lets you know if you need treatment, such as medications, injections, hormone therapy, home remedies, or specialist referrals.
